In 1904 Pittsburgh, slavery is over but the rules aren't black and white. Aunt Esther, 285 years old and a "washer of souls," presides as those around her struggle to "live right." When a young man appears to rid himself of guilt, a journey to the City of Bones leaves him bathed in redemption. But as he will learn from his new caretakers, to escape is not a guarantee of freedom.
